(Application to NIE for individuals and companies)

The first step to do business in Spain is to obtain the NIE (Número de identificación de Extranjero). The NIE is the identification number for everyone who is not a Spanish citizen. That includes EU citizens and non-EU citizens. Without the NIE you cannot incorporate any company in Spain.

The steps to obtain a NIE are:

  • If possible fill out the online NIE application form (EX-15) which you can find in the following link: http://bit.ly/Yp4H3d, and print. If you cannot fill out the form online you can also obtain it at the “Oficina de Extranjería” or the Spanish Consulate as you will see in the next step.
  • If you are in Spain, go to the police station or to the “Oficina de Extranjería”. If you are outside of Spain, go to the nearest Spanish Consulate. In both cases you must bring:
  • The filled-out form
  • A supporting document (such as a notarised letter) showing why you need a NIE, i.e. for the incorporation of a Spanish company, which in that case you have to present the company name certificate conceded by the Mercantile Register of Spain.
  • A copy of your passport (all pages)
  • A passport photo
  • Approximately 12€ to pay Tax Form 790
